World Rally Cross to add electric cars
IMG the promoter of the World Rally Cross events has revealed that it is working with manufacturers and the FIA on plans to introduce electric technology.
According to World Rallycross Managing Director Paul Bellamy in an interview with motorsport.com “We’re looking at electric rallycross because it’s what the manufacturers are asking for,” said Bellamy. “They understand and see how rallycross lends itself perfectly to electric motor racing, because the races are over quickly and the cars being used relate to the cars that you see every day on the road.”
With a number of manufacturers already supporting teams in the World Rally Cross series it certainly makes sense for the likes of Peugeot, Volkswagen and Audi to show interest. This is particularly so when you consider the massive interest in Formula E at the moment.
Expect to see Austrian company STARD involved with this. The company started by WRC and RX driver Manfred Stohl have already be developing an electric rally car for a couple of years now. We featured it an article on this car here >>
